French faïence jug from Onnaing, c.1900, with a sculptural grape and leaf handle is even more beautiful in person
The crackled glaze and hand-painted florals give it warmth, colour, and real presence.
A piece that holds its own—no styling required.
DESCRIPTION
A French barbotine jug produced by the Onnaing faïencerie in northern France, known for its expressive, relief-decorated ceramics around the turn of the century.
The form is softly tapered with a pouring spout, finished in a creamy tin glaze with natural age crazing throughout. Hand-painted floral sprays wrap the body, while the handle is modelled as a twisting vine with grapes and leaves—adding depth and a sculptural quality that sets it apart.
Marked to the base with model number C12.
Originally made as a table or water jug, now best used as a decorative piece.
HOW TO STYLE
• On a kitchen shelf to break up neutral ceramics
• As a standalone piece on stone or timber
• With branches, or left empty to show the handle detail
• Grouped with French pottery for contrast
CONDITION
