Description

This antique French jardinière is a striking example of late 19th to early 20th century cast iron work, designed originally for use in garden terraces and orangeries.

The form is classically Rococo revival, with flowing asymmetry, shell motifs and deeply cast decorative relief running across all sides. It stands on elegant scrolled feet, giving it both presence and lift.

What makes this piece particularly special is its surface. The layered, chalky patina — a mix of softened whites, greys and exposed darker undertones — has developed naturally over time, creating a beautifully aged, almost stone-like finish. This is not a refined or polished object; it carries the quiet irregularities and depth that only age can produce.

The jardinière is substantial and weighty, with a drainage hole in place, allowing it to be used as originally intended for planting. It also works beautifully indoors styled as a sculptural centrepiece, filled or left empty to showcase its form.
