A remarkable pair of heavy French hand-forged iron andirons, combining traditional fireside function with a rather wonderful detail — circular holders designed to cradle and gently warm a glass beside the fire.
Substantial in both scale and weight, each andiron has been individually worked by hand, with the irregular hammering, forged edges and wonderfully tactile surface that distinguish old wrought iron from modern reproduction pieces. The tall uprights terminate in open circular baskets, while a series of forged hooks runs down the front.
Their beauty lies in their honesty. Nothing is perfectly uniform, nor should it be. The slight differences between the pair, tool marks and wonderfully textured blackened surface are all part of their character.
Originally made as functional fireside pieces, today they are equally compelling as sculptural objects.
Ways to use them
At the fireplace
Position traditionally as a pair flanking an open fireplace. Their height gives them real architectural presence, particularly against stone, plaster, brick or an antique cast-iron fire surround.
For a fireside brandy
Place a brandy balloon or heat-resistant glass in each upper cradle — a wonderfully old-world way to gently warm a drink by the fire and a great talking point.
As fireside tool stands
The forged hooks can be used to hang fireplace tools such as a poker, brush or tongs, depending on the dimensions of your tools.
With or without a working fire
They are strong enough visually to dress an unused fireplace, instantly giving an empty hearth depth and authenticity.
As sculptural ironwork
Outside the fireplace, the pair could work beautifully in a library, wine room or beside a large stone fireplace as pieces of French vernacular ironwork in their own right.

A particularly characterful pair — heavy, beautifully primitive and unmistakably handmade. The kind of utilitarian French object that has become decorative precisely because it was never intended to be.
