We sourced this mirror for its composition — not just the reflection, but the panel above it.
The applied ornament sits against a soft mineral ground, framed by muted blue and worn back to reveal the red bole beneath. It reads as layered rather than decorative.
It has the proportions of a traditional trumeau, designed to sit above a console or fireplace, where the upper panel carries the visual weight and the mirror below brings light into the room.
There is a calm to the palette — chalky cream, aged blue, and rubbed back warmth — which allows it to sit comfortably in both traditional and more pared-back interiors.

Description
The upper panel is defined by a neoclassical cartouche, built from scrolling foliate forms and a central drop motif. The ornament is applied rather than carved, giving it a slightly softened, time-worn edge.
What sets this piece apart is the surface. The polychrome finish has been built up in layers — a mineral cream field, a muted blue surround, and ornament that has worn back to reveal the red bole beneath. It gives depth without relying on gilding alone.
The lower mirror is deliberately simple. It grounds the piece and allows the panel above to read as a decorative element rather than competing for attention.
The proportions are architectural. This is not a small wall mirror — it is intended to sit within a space and anchor it.
Condition
Good overall condition consistent with age.
- Surface wear to painted and gilded areas
- Minor losses and softening to composition ornament
- Mirror plate replaced at a later date
All of which contribute to its character and do not detract from its overall presence.
Works particularly well:
- Above a fireplace
- Over a console or sideboard
- In an entry where height and verticality matter
It brings both structure and light without overwhelming a room.
