A hand-painted French faïence plate from Quimper, centred with the royal arms of France and the historic battle cry “Montjoie Saint Denis.”
Made by Henriot — one of France’s oldest ceramic houses — it carries the kind of detail and symbolism that gives a piece real presence, even when simply placed.
Whilst there is so much fascinating and rich history within this piece, it’s okay to love it just because it looks gorgeous!
DESCRIPTION
A Breton faïence plate produced by Henriot Quimper, a workshop active since the 17th century and known for its hand-painted ceramics.
The centre features a blue shield with three gold fleur-de-lis — the royal arms of France — crowned and framed with a banner reading “Montjoie Saint Denis,” the traditional rallying cry of French kings.
The border is finished with repeating fleur-de-lis and loose green brushwork, typical of Quimper decoration, with a warm ochre rim. The painting shows the slight variation and softness that comes with hand work.
Marked Henriot Quimper to the reverse, along with the decorator’s initial.
Produced mid-20th century, but drawing directly on much earlier French royal and regional symbolism.
WHY IT WORKS
This is not just decorative — it carries recognisable French iconography that reads clearly in a space. The blue and ochre palette grounds it, while the motif adds structure and intent.
