A striking 19th-century French cast iron jardinière, richly decorated with Rococo scrollwork, floral garlands and a central cartouche. Produced during the Napoléon III period, these ornate planters were commonly used to decorate formal gardens, terraces and conservatories across France.
This example has developed a wonderful timeworn patina, with layers of historic paint where deep black has worn back to reveal the iron-red underlayer beneath. The sculptural relief work is beautifully expressive, with shell and foliate motifs that echo the decorative style of the Louis XV Rococo revival popular during the Second Empire.
Solidly cast and raised on small feet, the planter has five small drainage holes and was designed as a working garden piece. Today it makes a characterful decorative object that can be styled in many ways indoors or out. This is an heirloom piece to be treasured.
