Italy, Circa 1790–1820
An architectural late 18th century mirror retaining its original polychrome surface — a mineral-painted ground with selectively applied gilding to carved detail.
The painted layer absorbs light. The gilding defines the carving. This interplay creates depth without glare and allows the ornament to read clearly from across a room.
Broken pediment cresting with central mascaron, structured sides, and restrained neoclassical detailing place the piece between Louis XVI and early Directoire influence, interpreted through a regional Italian workshop.
The surface has not been cosmetically restored. Wear is consistent with age and integral to its character.
Description
Unlike fully gilded mirrors of the same period, this example was designed with contrast in mind. The muted green-grey ground sits beneath raised carved elements, allowing the gilding to articulate edges rather than dominate the frame.
Over time, that layered finish has softened naturally. High points have worn back; recessed areas retain depth. This variation cannot be replicated — it is the result of time interacting with material.
At 138 cm in height, the proportions give the piece vertical presence without excess. It works as an anchoring element above a fireplace, console, or in a powder room where reflection needs to be controlled rather than amplified.
The mirror plate has been replaced at some point in its life — a practical update that maintains clarity while preserving the integrity of the original frame.
